The End of the Cartoon-A-Day Project

This time last year, I set myself the task of drawing one topical(ish) cartoon a day for a year. It’s something I’d never really done before, outside of the odd cartoon I drew with the express purpose of getting rejected by Private Eye.

One year on, this project has now been completed. They run in the Topical Cartoons section and there is a cartoon for six days of every week; following a national newspaper structure, I didn’t do Sundays. Saturdays was usually a sport cartoon.

After a bit of a shaky start, with gaps here and there and not knowing whether to be colour, bi-chrome or just ink outlines, I settled into a regular rhythm. Sometimes, inspiration was hard to come by and I would use a non-topical idea I’d stored previously. But there’s been a lot of inspiration over this exceptionally busy year, from the Arab Spring, Super-Injunctions, Phone Hacking and the summer Riots.

It’s been a lot of fun, but I won’t be doing one a day for the foreseeable future. I’ll do the odd one now and then, most likely to be rejected by Private Eye or completely ignored by When Saturday Comes. See ya later.
